Little Amsterdam Coffee Art Gallery is pleased to present new works by 9 year old wunderkind, Dovi Safar (@byDovi) opening January 18th, 2020. This is the artists first gallery show, having been asked by curator, Phree Hester to partake in a mixed medium art gallery exhibition.
About the artist;
Dovi Safar, a dedicated skater, is in 3rd grade, and has a keen eye for composition and color with influences from street art, skating, and fashion. Through his art, he captures the feeling of freedom, graffiti, and speaks to excessive consumerism. His series, Superwe, is a response to the fashion label Supreme, while his comics explore the space between art and commercialism, graffiti versus paid adverts, and the consequences that come with accepting one over the other.
In his art, Dovi uses mixed mediums, like paint pens, pixelated graphics, and found objects, unifying disparate elements to create colorful modern art pieces. The work displays a unique eye with a finger on the pulse of culture; something you would expect from a seasoned artist and designer, rather than that of a nine year old who is only just beginning his journey into the world of modern art.
“A thoughtful display of artistic expression and commentary shown through a uniquely youthful and honest lens.” – D. Cohen
Through Dovi’s work we learn that while age may correlate with knowledge, wisdom and expressive intention are age agnostic.
About the curator and gallery;
PHREE Hester is a Los Angeles native born in Inglewood California, who grew up between Inland Empire and Los Angeles. As a fashion designer for 8 years, and a artist for 15 years, PHREE uses his fashion as a vehicle to drive his art into the hearts of the world. As a kid he was always drawn to the arts, loving that with art, he could express himself in a way like no other. He used to be teased because he wasn’t that good at drawing and now he gets paid to travel the world and showcasing his unique talent. PHREE’s dream has always been to elevate himself and those around him with knowledge and experience that teaches us how to be the best us. That feeling of being PHREE is what drives him to continue creating and inspiring. His fashion acts as a function that allows him to showcase his ideas that may have been created on a canvas that now allows him to use his creative style in producing high quality art designs, always creating the best quality possible.
